FARMER'S DAY
What is Farmer's Day?
The second Friday in June is when we tip our caps to the folks who feed the nation. It's a day for us to recognize farmers and ranchers for the work they put in and give them the appreciation they deserve. This year, we're focusing on the future of farming and shining a light on ag's next generation.
Honoured to Support Ag for Generations
Founded with the future in mind
UFA started when a group of farmers banded together in 1909 to improve their chances at generational success. This legacy lives on today through UFA's involvement in the community and extensive investment in young farmers.
We advocate for you
From town halls to the halls of the highest levels of government, we represent farmers and ranchers in key government discussions and raise awareness about what the industry needs to thrive.
We work together
As a co-operative, it's in our DNA to support one another for the good of our members' families and futures. Every business decision we make is for the good of farmers and ranchers.
A Brief History of Farmer's Day
The first, similar Farmer's Day event appeared over a century ago. It was known as UFA Sunday, a day to take a break from the farm and gather with friends and neighbours at church services, picnic lunches, sporting events, evening dances, sing-alongs and more. In 1945, the Strathmore UFA Local put forward a resolution to observe Farmer's Day annually and this was passed at the UFA annual convention. Over the years, the day has been marked by celebrations, monument lighting, contests and giveaways and at one point was even a statutory holiday in Alberta.
Celebrating the Next Generation of Agriculture
Perhaps more than any other industry in Canada, agriculture is experiencing a generational changing of hands. Succession plans are playing out in real time as farms pass down to younger generations. This next cohort of farmers are innovators and gamechangers with the industry's future in mind—and we couldn't be more excited.
We're inspired by the stories of our members.
UFA was founded to give a voice to farmers and ranchers, their families and communities. Everyone in our co-operative considers it an honour to champion our members and be a part of their lives.
